Online casino games are not licensed in France

French law opened three forms of online gambling in 2010: sports betting, horse-race betting and poker. Online casino games, such as slots, roulette and blackjack, were not included and cannot be offered legally to players in France.

Who regulates online gambling in France

The Autorité nationale des jeux (ANJ), which replaced ARJEL in 2020, licenses operators for sports betting, horse racing and poker only. It publishes the list of licensed operators and blocks unlicensed sites. A casino site that accepts French players does so without a French licence.

What that means for you

  • No online casino holds an ANJ licence, so there is no licensed casino for us to recommend to players in France.
  • An unlicensed site gives you none of the French protections: no ANJ oversight, no French dispute route, and your funds may be hard to recover.
  • Land-based casinos in France are legal and regulated separately.
